Transcendentalism
Definition:
A composite philosophy that grew partially out of discontentment with New England Unitarianism that had been growing increasingly conservative. The belief that truths about life and death can be reached by going outside the world of the senses.

Chief Characteristics:
- Nonconformity and free thought.
- Nature is the supreme teacher of higher truths. It is the source of inspiration and reverence. There is unmediated access to God via Nature.
- Individual is important. It is superior to any form of traditional or conventional authority. Human Beings are divine
- Simplicity
- The Over-Soul: the connection of God man and nature. (refer to picture)
- Rejection of materialism and popular culture.
