"Two years he walked the earth"
In the film "Into the Wild" Chris McCandless the main character takes an extraordinary journey throughout the US to find out who he is and isolate himself from society. Throughout the film he embodies transcendental ideals such as paddling d0wn a river even though he needs a permit to do it because he does not want to be on a waiting list and wants to live by his own choices not others. Another example is seperating himself from the 20th century career he would of had if he did not seperate himself from soceity. McCandless lives in nature by choice and that choice is shown by the video below.
In the video below you get a sense of McCandless's life in nature. The song "Soceity" by Eddie Vedder ironically plays in the background. The many lines throughout the song expresses McCandless's disagreement with how soceity functions, "Society, have mercy on me/I hope you're not angry if I disagree," ties into his desire to live in nature by choice and the disagreement he has with his parents to live a lavish lifestyle. Sean Penn the director uses his camera shots along with this song to get his audience to throughly engage themselves in McCandless's new life in nature. He uses collage shots to show the different techinques McCandless uses to survive in the wild. He also zooms in on important objects in the movie such as McCandless's journal where he rights down the scenery or objects he sees throughout his journey in Alaska. He also uses zoomed out shots such as when McCandless is on top of the mountain peak to show how he feels free in nature.
