The Beginnings Of Transcendentalism
Brief History:
Transcendentalism was an American movement of the 1830's and 1840's. It is known as the first notable American intellectual movement. Transcendentalism began because certain Unitarian ministers found that society was controlling what people did. They believed that people as God's perfect creations had the ability to do the right thing as long as they are left alone. In 1836 the Transcendental Club was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The publication of Emerson's essay Nature (1836) is considered to be the moment in which transcendentalism became a huge cultural movement. The club was founded by New England intellectuals including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller.
